At the African Leadership Forum in Kampala on April 7-8, 2025, former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma delivered an address advocating for reforms to unlock Africa’s growth potential. Under the theme “Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa,”

He addressed an audience of former and current leaders, policy experts, and representatives from African institutions, who gathered to discuss the continent’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In his address, Dr. Koroma underscored the critical observation that no nation can truly prosper while its citizens are impeded by preventable diseases and inefficient public systems. He articulated the urgent need for educational and skills development frameworks to be aligned with the dynamic requirements of contemporary labor markets, emphasizing the necessity of equipping the youth with essential competencies such as digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and vocational training.

Furthermore, the former president spotlighted agriculture as a vital growth engine for the continent. With Africa’s extensive natural resources and fertile land, he asserted that the agricultural sector holds significant potential for job creation, food security, and industrial advancement. However, he cautioned that this potential remains largely unexploited due to an over-reliance on subsistence farming practices.

Dr. Koroma emphasized that value addition, technological innovation, and modernizing the agricultural value chain are key to making agriculture crucial for inclusive economic transformation and promoting more sustainable practices.

Dr. Koroma’s remarks sparked a collective call for urgent reforms to accelerate Africa’s growth and achieve the SDGs. His passionate plea underscores the need for bold leadership, strategic investments, and a steadfast commitment to unlocking the continent’s potential.
